      IAC Workshop on Backyard Surveillance of Emerging Infectious Diseases was held in Beijing on November 21, 2009.

      This workshop was initiated by InterAcademy Council (IAC) and Chinese Academy of SciencesCASand organized by Beijing Institutes of Life Science (BIOLS), CAS and CAS Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Microbiology & Immunology. Its theme was science, policy and preparation. More than 20 representatives from throughout China (Beijing, Nanjing, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Shanghai, Shandong), Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia and the United States participated in this international workshop addressing the common threat of emerging infectious diseases. Following the presentations, the workshop was open for a round table discussion. Topics included various animal model systems for infectious disease and the definition of backyard surveillance. The workshop concluded with a database overview by Dr. Peter Bogner, this is a very good example for clone surveillance and data sharing of the emerging infectious diseases.

      CAS President LU Yongxiang delivered an important speech at the reception. He believed that this workshop would provide a platform for strengthen academic exchanges and get an evidence-based report for awareness of government officials, politicians, scientists and ordinary people to the emerging infectious diseases.
